I met Hacer in my freshman year at the University of Miskolc, and during her one-year stay we developed a friendship, so when I facetimed her with my questions, she was very enthusiastic.

How many countries have you been to since you've started the Erasmus program? Which one was your favorite and why?

-I have been to 17 cities in 10 countries. My favorite was Copenhagen because of the nature there, atmosphere and its history amazed me so much, and people are very nice there as well.

Isn’t it hard being without your family and friends for a year?

-It was so hard in the beginning, but later I didn't want to go home, because I enjoyed being in Hungary, and I liked the Hungarian people. I could always connect with my friends and family via internet.

Have you ever faced racism or bullying here in Hungary?

-I haven’t faced any racism . I am Muslim, and I am wearing hijab, so everybody was staring at me whenever I went out .It was strange for me because in other countries there are more Muslims and people got used to seeing women in hijab.

What do you think about Hungarians?

-I can’t generalize about all Hungarians. Some of them are very friendly and helpful .Some of them are really cold, rude and heedless. But all together they are so much better than I expected.

If you had the chance, would you come here for another year?

-I would definitely come here again! I love my teachers, my friends and Erasmus life in Miskolc. It was one of my best experiences.

What is your advice for future Erasmus students?

-Firstly, if they had concerns about choosing Hungary, I’d like to tell them that they don’t have to be afraid, because it is one of the best countries for Erasmus students. There are a lot of good places and I think everything is quite cheap, and the public transportation is above average in Miskolc, so every student can easily live there. I’d suggest them to travel a lot and participate in all activities, and also they shouldn’t forget about their studies because the real aim is acquiring knowledge.
